C6-C7 Fusion: terrible pain a year after

Q:
Age: 30   Sex: M   Concern: Spinal cord injury

Greetings,

I recently underwent a C6-C7 fusion in March of last year. Everything seemed to be fine at first, however now I am having terrible neck, shoulder, arm, & hand pain. I just had another CT Scan done and there were no new findings.

I am confused and wondering what could possibly be causing all this pain. It is rather difficult and painful to turn my head and it's even uncomfortable to sit for long periods of time.

I am worried as I am a single father to a 2 year old little girl and feel like my health is deteriorating. Can you explain any of this? Is this common post op symptoms? I really appreciate your help!

Thanks,
Ryan

A:
I suggest you get a second opinion. First and foremost, you want to make sure that there is no structure compression of the spinal cord or the nerve roots. If instruments were placed, you want to make sure that they are in good position. You also want to make sure that you have a solid fusion.
If all the above are ruled out, then you may just have post fusion pain. Sometimes, there is just no reason for it. You may want, then, to see a pain physician. Medications, injections, spinal stimulator, psychological support are some of the options.
