please help- dont know which type of doctor to see to get help

HI

I am emailing you in a last attempt to try to find help for my husband. I will try to keep the details to the point and would unbelievably appreciate your comments.

My husband is 26 years old. He has been suffering from pain in his lower back on both sides very close to his spine. About maybe 10" up from his tail bone. He has been suffering from this since he was maybe 16-17 years old.

For the last 5 years we have tried the following;
massage, chiroprator, orthodics, pain pills, stretching, home remedies, osteopath. We are not sure if the osteopath he saw was a regular one as he seemed to use different methods so I dont know if that counts. He did only extremely light touching and tapping in different areas on his back and neck.

Something has shifted and gotten much worse from one of the treatments we think by the chiropractor unless it has shifted on its own. At any rate he can no longer sit down for more than 10 minutes at a 90 degree angle and cant sit at all on anything hard (like a bench) He cant participate in a lot of activities he enjoys and is in more pain than can possibly be regular muscle strain. He cant walk for reasonable lengths of time. I do know that the xrays the chiropractor took showed he had an extra vertebrae and that his spine was not curved naturally but more straight. He did some physiotherapy with the hope of strengthening his core muscles but when he began the therapist said his core muscles were quite strong as he could easily do the exercises. It has been very frustrating.

I have trouble with typical muscle pain in my neck from working at a computer but his pain is no where in the same category. I am very concerned and he is very frustrated. We dont know what type of doctor to see. Our regular family doctor has recommended pain pills (he's only 26 and doesn't want to take drugs forever) and the other people we have seen don't seem find what the problem actually is. What type of doctor specializes in finding what the problem is. If it is an osteopath is there a certain type of osteopath or are they all the same.

His pain is effecting his comfort, his life, our marriage, how active he can be with our kids. If you can provide some direction on what type of doctor we can look for in our area or any info at all we would be so grateful.

Thanks kindly for your time.

I would go see a physiatrist. You can go to http://www.aapmr.org and locate a physician near you.
