Complicated back trauma (L1/L4) due to bicycle/lorry

Q:
Age: 25   Sex: F   Concern: Spinal cord injury

Dear Dr. Tran,

10 months ago a cement truck ran over me and my bicycle from which I obtained: L4 compression fracture, L1,2,3 left proces transverse broken off, right shoulder out of socket, nerval irritation lower left leg and broken left toe.

I was treated conservatively and was in a corset for nearly 5 months of which I spent the first 3 flat on my back.

The latest CAT scan shows no change with the situation 10 months ago. I am still on a very high dosage of painmedication and am struggling more and more with 2 types of pain:

1)Sharp jabbing pains about 4 times a day in the L4/lower back region. 2)Constant, less local, "burning" pains in both lower and upper back

My orthopedic surgeon seems to have a very "let's wait and see" attitude and whilst I initially agreed with this, we are now 10 months further and there has been zero pain improvement for 5 months.

Please can you give suggestions of what to do or where (in Europe) to go.

Many many thanks,

-- Bicyclegirl

A:
ask you doctor about kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty. It is very effective in controlling pain for vertebral fracture.
