Can you give me advice about possible
My sister aged 78 last week suffered what her doctors have described as a Spinal Stroke. She awoke feeling her right leg was strange, called her daughter, was admitted to hospital (she walked in) and within 2 or 3 days couldn't move her right leg at all and has only minimal movement in her left. She has been told that there is a chance of her left leg improving with physiotherapy, but not her right.
About 25 years ago, when i was in my early forties, I suffered a similar problem, although it took longer for me to lose the use of my legs. I also suffered back pain. The othopaedic surgeon who treated me said that I had had a prolapsed disc which had torn the ligament in my spine, leaving a blood clot which was pressing on the spinal cord. He also said that I have a very narrow spinal canal which hadn't helped the problem. However, he removed the clot and I recovered well over the months that followed.
Our mother suffered a similar mysterious paralysis, from which she never recovered about 45 years ago.
My questions are; do you think that there is any treatment/surgery which might help my sister as it did me or must she resign herself to life in a wheel chair as our mother had to?
And do you think that there is some link in the fact that 3 members of our family have suffered what seem to be similar problems? If so, is there anything other family members could do to try to prevent them happening to them?
With many thanks for your help and advice
