another spinal fusion operation?

Q:
Age: 43   Sex: M   Concern: Chronic pain

Following an accident in 1988 I have subsequently had 3 spinal operations, the last being a fusion at L4,L5,S1. I had the fusion in 2002, since then I have continuos persistant pain which I have managed with medication, excercise, relaxation, distraction techniques etc... However the pain has increased to such a state that for the last 2 months the pain has become overwhelming. I have since the accident had numbness from knee to toes, and some pain, but this has increased to the levels prior to all operations and the tingling and burning are now worse than ever.

My question is this, my first 3 operations were carried out by an orthopaedic surgeon, do you think I should have a. another operation (fusion) and b. whould you suggest a neurosurgeon? to carry out op?

A:
In general, repeat operations rarely work. That is not to say that they won't. The odds are against you, however.
