Can this be relieved through excercising

Q:
Age: 55   Sex: M   Concern: Slipped disc, sciatic nerve pain

Three weeks ago, I was cutting firewood and suddenly experienced severe pain which began in my lower right hip and extended down through my right leg. I had an MRI which revealed a slipped disk affecting the sciatic nerve. I had an ephideral which involved steroid injections and the pain for the past few days since the procedure is worse. Standing longer then just a few minutes is difficult and sitting is impossible; the only position remotely comfortable is laying on my back. Are there excersises that can effectively relieve or reduce the pain and strengthen my muscles vs considering surgery?
